About Cboe VVIX Index

About the Cboe VVIX Index (Cboe Volatility of Volatility Index)

The Cboe VVIX Index is an indicator that measures the volatility of market volatility itself. More specifically, it quantifies the volatility of the widely-used Cboe VIX Index. While the VIX is a "fear index" that indicates market fear and uncertainty, VVIX tracks how much the fear index itself fluctuates. In other words, it is an indicator that measures the volatility of market sentiment volatility, or what might be called the "fear of fear."

There are several reasons why this indicator is important. First, VVIX reflects how market participants forecast VIX movements and indicates the degree of market instability. When VVIX is high, the market anticipates large fluctuations in short-term volatility, indicating a more opaque and unpredictable market environment. Conversely, when VVIX is low, the market is considered relatively stable. Institutional investors and hedge funds use this indicator for portfolio risk management and constructing hedge strategies.

As a general trend, VVIX tends to spike sharply during periods of acute market volatility and declines as the market regains composure. Financial crises, pandemics, geopolitical risks materializing, and other unpredictable shocks cause VVIX to rise rapidly. As an important observation point, when VVIX reaches extremely high levels, it suggests the market faces extreme uncertainty, serving as a reference for investment decisions. On the other hand, sustained VVIX declines suggest that market sentiment is gradually stabilizing.
