Economic Overview of Kosovo

Kosovo Economic Profile

Kosovo is a young independent country located in Southeast Europe that has pursued rapid economic development since its independence in 2008. With a small population of approximately 1.8 million, it is classified as an upper-middle-income country and has achieved gradual growth. With a GDP of approximately $20 billion, it holds a medium-sized economic scale in the Western Balkans region.

In terms of economic structure, the service sector is the dominant industry, accounting for over 60% of the total economy. Retail, telecommunications, and financial services play particularly important roles. Manufacturing accounts for approximately 20% and centers on food processing, mineral processing, and textile industries. Agriculture accounts for approximately 12% of GDP and remains an important sector, though in recent years there has been a shift toward the service sector. Additionally, Kosovo is one of the Balkans' leading mineral-rich countries, with mining of coal, nickel, and zinc supporting the economy.

As a recent economic trend, Kosovo maintains moderate growth rates, with projected GDP growth of 3-4% annually between 2022 and 2024. The unemployment rate remains relatively high at approximately 15-20%, with creating employment opportunities for youth in particular being a challenge. The country is steadily progressing toward EU integration, with structural reforms and institutional strengthening underway. Additionally, the promotion of digitalization and development of the startup ecosystem are drawing attention as new sources of growth, with increased investment in the IT industry.

Notable points include Kosovo's relatively low level of external debt and comparatively sound fiscal stability. However, delays in infrastructure development, anti-corruption measures, and addressing energy challenges remain important ongoing issues. Furthermore, improved relations with Serbia and progress in regional integration will be key to long-term economic growth and stability enhancement.
