About GDP per Capita (PPP)

# About GDP per Capita (PPP)

GDP per capita (PPP) is an indicator calculated by dividing the Gross Domestic Product adjusted using Purchasing Power Parity by the population. This indicator measures how much economic prosperity the people of each country actually enjoy. Standard GDP statistics use exchange rates, so differences in price levels are not reflected. However, by making PPP adjustments, it becomes possible to compare the actual purchasing power of the same goods and services across different countries. In other words, using the dollar as a common standard, it is possible to compare the living standards of each nation's population more accurately.

There are multiple reasons why this indicator is important. First, it helps to accurately understand the economic gap between countries. The higher a country's GDP per capita (PPP), the higher its national economic productivity per capita and the relatively higher its living standards are considered to be. Second, comparison between developing and developed countries becomes more meaningful. In developing countries where prices are lower, PPP adjustment allows a more realistic understanding of the actual purchasing power of the population. Additionally, it is used in measuring the effectiveness of each country's economic policies and in prioritizing international development assistance.

As a general trend, developed countries maintain high GDP per capita (PPP), with Luxembourg, Singapore, and Norway positioned at the top. Meanwhile, the gap between low-income and high-income countries remains substantial, serving as a symbol of global inequality. In recent years, improvements in GDP per capita (PPP) have garnered attention alongside the growth of emerging economies such as China and India. However, since a high indicator alone does not reflect income distribution inequality or social problems, analysis combined with other indicators is important.
