BLS Core Services CPI (Excluding Housing)
Explanation of BLS Core Services CPI (Excluding Housing)
BLS Core Services CPI (Excluding Housing) is a type of Consumer Price Index released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This indicator measures inflationary pressures across the services sector as a whole, but excludes housing-related expenses. Specifically, it tracks price changes across various service industries including healthcare, education, food service, transportation, entertainment, and financial services.
There are multiple reasons why this indicator is important. First, it is an extremely important indicator for understanding inflation trends in the United States. Compared to the general Core CPI (excluding food and energy), it provides a more detailed view of price pressures in the services sector. Second, it serves as a basis for monetary policy decisions. Since the Federal Reserve Board (FRB) references this data when making interest rate decisions, market participants need to monitor it closely. Third, because housing costs are excluded, it makes it easier to see more fundamental trends in service prices that are not affected by short-term fluctuations in the housing market.
As a general trend, the services sector tends to experience sticky inflation because labor shortages and wage-increase pressures often lead to price pass-through. Particularly during the post-pandemic economic recovery phase, supply could not keep up with rapid recovery in service demand, accelerating price increases. Key points to note include whether the rate of increase in this indicator remains at continuously high levels, which is important for determining the persistence of inflation. Additionally, cross-comparison with other price indicators allows for evaluation of the overall economic balance.
