On the Population Composition of Curaçao

Population Pyramid Analysis of Curaçao

Curaçao's population composition exhibits characteristics of transition from "mature-type" to "aging transition period." The pyramid shape shows a bell-curve form with relatively limited proportion of young people and broad distribution from middle-aged to elderly age groups, suggesting transition toward a developed-country-style population composition.

As a major demographic trend, a pronounced low fertility tendency stands out. Due to declining birth rates, the proportion of young people (especially ages 0-14) continues to decrease, while simultaneously the proportion of elderly people (65 and over) increases due to increased life expectancy. This is a typical pattern of fewer children and aging, and the stage of demographic dividend as in the past has become a thing of the past.

Such changes in population structure bring serious impacts on Curaçao's socioeconomy. The relative decline in working-age population becomes a constraint factor on economic growth, while social security expenditures for healthcare and pensions for the elderly surge sharply. Furthermore, the declining ratio of the tax-bearing working-age generation increases pressure on government finances. For the country with tourism as a major industry, responding to population decline and aging requires strategic policy shifts including review of immigration policy and diversification of industrial structure.
