CSVPopulation Composition of Chile
# Explanation of Chile's Population Pyramid
Chile's population pyramid exhibits a "mature type" structure at a relatively advanced stage of demographic transition compared to other Latin American countries. In particular, there is a gradual decrease in the proportion of children aged 0-14 years, while the elderly population aged 65 and above shows steady growth. This structure reflects demographic changes including declining birth rates and increasing life expectancy.
Chile has experienced rapid population aging over the past 50 years. While the birth rate was high and young populations dominated in the 1970s, with economic development and social change—particularly due to expanded educational opportunities for women and increased labor participation—the birth rate has declined significantly. Currently, Chile's birth rate has fallen below 1.5, and the population growth rate has slowed.
These changes in population structure have created major challenges for the social security system and labor market. Aging increases the burden of healthcare and pension costs, while the relative decline in the working-age population may lead to slower economic growth. Simultaneously, the reduction in young people has brought changes in educational facility demand, with depopulation becoming severe in certain regions. As Chile pursues entry into the developed nations club, policy responses addressing these demographic trends have become urgent.
