CSVPopulation Composition of Bermuda
Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends of Bermuda
Bermuda exhibits an "aging" population composition characteristic of a typical aging society. While the working-age population (15-64 years) comprises approximately 70% of the total, the elderly population (65 years and over) is rapidly increasing, with particularly notable expansion of the post-elderly population (75 years and over). In contrast, the child population (0-14 years) remains at approximately 15% of the total, showing a clear declining birth rate trend.
In terms of demographic dynamics, Bermuda faces serious aging with declining birth rates. The total fertility rate remains below 2.0, and the reversal of the population pyramid is progressing due to declining births and increased life expectancy. This trend is closely related to developed country-specific social phenomena such as high living standards and education levels, and rising female labor force participation rates.
The impacts on society and economy are serious. The reduction in working-age population combined with increased dependent population (particularly the elderly) enlarges the burden on social security systems. The sustainability of pension systems and medical/care services has become a major issue. On the other hand, utilizing the experience and knowledge of elderly workers through extended employment, and accepting immigrants to address skilled labor shortages, have emerged as important policy challenges.
