Australia's Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends
Australia's population composition is in a stage of transition from a relatively balanced "mature type" to a "slightly aging type." Observing the pyramid's shape, the working-age population in the 20-40 age group is thick, while the youth population aged 0-14 shows a marked declining trend. This is a typical pattern of developed countries, demonstrating that declining fertility rates and extended life expectancy are progressing simultaneously.
The most significant characteristic of demographic trends is population growth driven by high immigration. Australia supplements its low natural increase with large-scale immigration of working-age population annually. Since this immigrant population tends to skew young, the youth portion of the pyramid does not narrow completely and is maintained. Nevertheless, the wave of population aging is progressing steadily in the long term.
Regarding socioeconomic impacts, securing the labor force is becoming an important issue. As the proportion of elderly people rises, increases in healthcare and long-term care expenses are anticipated. Simultaneously, immigration policy maintains the working-age population, allowing for the stabilization of economic activity and tax revenue base. At the same time, immigrant social integration and infrastructure development have become important policy issues.
