CSVOn the Population Composition of Albania
On Albania's Population Pyramid and Demographic Dynamics
Albania's population composition exhibits a "youth-type pyramid" structure, characterized by a relatively large population in younger age groups. The proportion of the population under 15 years old accounts for approximately 18-20% of the total, representing a high level compared to other European countries. Meanwhile, the elderly population aged 65 and above comprises approximately 13-15%, below the European average. This balance positions Albania as a nation in transition toward an aging society.
In terms of demographic dynamics, Albania has shown a gradual declining trend from previously high birth rates. The economic crisis of the 1990s and social changes in the 2000s resulted in a substantial decrease in fertility rates. Simultaneously, the outward migration of youth seeking economic opportunities has been pronounced, with net outflows causing population decline. Consequently, the population pyramid is gradually shifting toward a "bell-shaped" structure.
Regarding societal and economic impacts, the country currently remains in a "demographic dividend period" with relatively abundant working-age population, possessing potential for economic growth. However, the outflow of youth abroad is causing a loss of domestic human capital and raising concerns about labor shortages. If declining birth rates continue in the future, burdens on pension and healthcare systems will increase, intensifying fiscal challenges. For sustained economic growth, job creation and education investment are urgent priorities.
