Economic Overview of Tajikistan

Tajikistan Economic Profile

Tajikistan is a lower-middle-income country located in Central Asia, and has pursued economic structural transformation and development following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. With a population of approximately 9.7 million and a GDP of approximately $38 billion, it is a small-scale economy. The country's economy is heavily dependent on primary industries centered on cotton production and hydroelectric power generation, with these two industries accounting for approximately 30-40% of GDP. Cotton in particular is Tajikistan's main export commodity, and the agricultural sector is extremely important to the national economy, providing approximately 30% of national employment.

Regarding recent economic trends, the country faces several challenges. The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent economic sanctions, along with ensuing geopolitical instability, have led to a decrease in remittances from workers to Russia (25-30% of GDP), causing severe impacts on the Tajikistan economy. Additionally, the deterioration of the Afghanistan situation in 2023 and the recurrence of border conflicts have brought domestic instability. Besides these external factors, inflation rates have also risen, and economic pressure from exchange fluctuations of the somoni currency has increased.

As notable points, the expansion of power generation capacity through the utilization of Tajikistan's water resources is noteworthy. The country possesses one of the world's highest hydroelectric power potential, with large-scale dam construction projects underway. While these projects improve regional power supply, they also create tensions with neighboring Afghanistan over water resource utilization. Furthermore, economic diversification and the development of non-agricultural industries, particularly infrastructure development and nurturing of manufacturing, are seen as key to future economic growth.
