Economic Overview of Honduras

Honduras Economic Profile

Honduras is a lower-middle-income country located in Central America with a population of approximately 10 million and a GDP scale of around $30 billion. The economy has traditionally been dependent on agriculture, with exports of primary products such as bananas and coffee serving as the main source of foreign exchange earnings. The banana industry in particular is the country's largest export industry and one of the world's leading producers. In recent years, the textile and apparel industries and maquiladoras (processing and assembly industries) have also grown as important industrial sectors, with a notable characteristic being deep economic relations with the United States.

The economy has a fragile foundation, with low industrial diversification and high poverty rates as challenges. In recent years, the country has been experiencing gradual recovery from the severe economic contraction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with GDP growth rates hovering around 3-4% from 2023 onwards. However, structural challenges such as inflationary pressures, depreciation of the lempira currency, and increases in external debt continue to exist.

A notable point is that political instability has become a major obstacle to economic growth. Corruption, organized crime, and social unrest are factors that have worsened the investment environment. Meanwhile, reform efforts such as participation in the Central American integrated market and promotion of digitalization are underway. Additionally, climate change-related natural disaster risks also increase economic uncertainty and may lead to further vulnerability of the agricultural sector. Institutional reform, investment in human capital, and industrial diversification are essential for future economic development.
